Give Back Alexandria

Give Back Alexandria logoWhat happens when you have more passion than capital to help Alexandria? That’s the challenge facing today’s young professionals, many of whom have joined together in ACT’s Give Back Alexandria. Members Scott and Sonia Price believe the group is true to its name. Says Scott, “It’s a great vehicle for giving back. You may not be able to give large sums of money, but collectively and combined with ACT matching funds, we see a big impact.” And the group’s fundraising is always … fun. Last year, its annual Blues and Bluegrass event attracted 200 young Alexandrians. For Scott, who makes a special effort to reach out to diverse segments of the community, the group is also “a great way to get so many different groups together with the common goal of helping the city.” And now, he says, given the current economic climate, “There couldn’t be a better time to get involved.”

ACT Announces New Executive Director - John Porter
Executive Director Announced for ACT for Alexandria
June 15, 2009--ACT for Alexandria, Alexandria’s community foundation, announced today that long-time Alexandria education leader John Porter will be its new Executive Director. He will begin his work with ACT in August.
“After considering over 50 outstanding applicants, our board came to the unanimous and enthusiastic conclusion that John Porter is best suited to lead ACT forward,” ACT for Alexandria President Allison Cryor DiNardo said. “He is widely known and universally loved by the Alexandria community. We are delighted that John is willing to start the next chapter of his career with ACT.”
Porter will retire from his position as Assistant Superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools to lead the nonprofit. He is best known for his 27 years at T.C. Williams High School, the last 22 as its principal. Earlier this year, Volunteer Alexandria honored Porter with the Marian Van Landingham Lifetime Achievement Award.
“John has been the city’s strongest advocate for children for at least a generation,” ACT board member Bill Babcock said. “His relationships, credibility and passion for this community will help ACT engage even more Alexandrians in building a prosperous future for all residents of this city. He is the right leader to help ACT increase its contribution and impact in Alexandria.”
ACT for Alexandria was founded five years ago as the Alexandria Community Trust, with the specific mission of increasing both the level and the strategic impact of philanthropy in the city.   Porter was instrumental in ACT’s creation and is a founding board member.
Porter will succeed Jonelle Wallmeyer, ACT’s founding Executive Director. Under Wallmeyer’s leadership, ACT has played a vital role in launching the Center for Alexandria’s Children, the Women’s Giving Circle of Alexandria, the Nonprofit Excellence Forum, the Alexandria Human Services Council, Give Back Alexandria, and much more.
