Give Back Alexandria

Give Back Alexandria logoWhat happens when you have more passion than capital to help Alexandria? That’s the challenge facing today’s young professionals, many of whom have joined together in ACT’s Give Back Alexandria. Members Scott and Sonia Price believe the group is true to its name. Says Scott, “It’s a great vehicle for giving back. You may not be able to give large sums of money, but collectively and combined with ACT matching funds, we see a big impact.” And the group’s fundraising is always … fun. Last year, its annual Blues and Bluegrass event attracted 200 young Alexandrians. For Scott, who makes a special effort to reach out to diverse segments of the community, the group is also “a great way to get so many different groups together with the common goal of helping the city.” And now, he says, given the current economic climate, “There couldn’t be a better time to get involved.”

ACT Receives Communty Service Award
According to the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia (LCNV), ACT has contributed to strengthening the management capacity of LCNV through a two-year funding initiative.  Support for organizational development is difficult to secure from most private sources.  Through ACT's capacity building program, LCNV was able to conduct a Management Assessment and Improvement Study in the first year and follow up this year with an ACT/Compass partnership project on Board Development.  Both initiatives have resulted in significant improvements in business practices.

ACT is truly invested in the community.  Not only has their financial support improved the way LCNV does business, but ACT's partnership with the City of Alexandria in co-sponsoring the Alexandria Council of Human Service Organizations (ACHSO) has helped the Council develop new partnerships with Alexandria nonprofits and crate lasting relationships with nonprofit leaders.  The Literacy Council has also benefitted from the professional development opportunities, networking sessions, and special events sponsored by ACT.  The breadth of outreach to the nonprofit community from ACT in just a few years has truly made a difference to the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia.

The mission of the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is to teach adults the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English in order to empower them to participate more fully and confidently in their communities.  To learn more about LCNV, visit:  www.lcnv.org.
