Give Back Alexandria
What happens when you have more passion than capital to help Alexandria? That’s the challenge facing today’s young professionals, many of whom have joined together in ACT’s Give Back Alexandria. Members Scott and Sonia Price believe the group is true to its name. Says Scott, “It’s a great vehicle for giving back. You may not be able to give large sums of money, but collectively and combined with ACT matching funds, we see a big impact.” And the group’s fundraising is always … fun. Last year, its annual Blues and Bluegrass event attracted 200 young Alexandrians. For Scott, who makes a special effort to reach out to diverse segments of the community, the group is also “a great way to get so many different groups together with the common goal of helping the city.” And now, he says, given the current economic climate, “There couldn’t be a better time to get involved.”

ACT is pleased to announce that we have received a grant from the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program, administered by Volunteer Fairfax. We will be hiring a Philanthropy Intern for the summer. The intern will be a vital member of our team for the summer, assisting with various event planning, development, and community problem solving projects. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the nonprofit field. Position Description: The Philanthropy Intern will support the work of ACT, while learning about the local nonprofit community and gaining crucial skills in fundraising, marketing & communications, and program development. This is a great opportunity for an undergraduate student who would like to develop professional skills and learn about foundations, grant-making and the nonprofit sector. Potential projects include marketing and promotion of our online care giving and community building partnership with Lotsa Helping Hands, analysis of donor prospects and engagement opportunities, as well as research on best practices in grant-making and building the capacity of nonprofit organizations. ACT is willing to work with matching the best projects to fit your interests.

Qualifications:
· Currently enrolled undergraduate student who will be returning as a full time student in the fall
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
· Ability to manage multiple deadlines and tasks efficiently and effectively
· Ability to work with a team to develop an idea and see it through to completion
· Demonstrated commitment to philanthropy and interest in Alexandria community
· Experience using Web 2.0 technologies and tools
Time Period: 8 consecutive weeks anytime between May 24 – August 20, 2010
Salary: $2,750 – 35 hours per week over 8 weeks. Funding provided by Exxon Mobil and program administered by Volunteer Fairfax.
