Two pivotal members of ACT are moving on to their “next act.” We extend our sincere thanks for years of invaluable service to Executive Director Jonelle Wallmeyer and Board Chairman Don Beyer, both extraordinary people who have been with ACT since its beginning.
Jonelle Wallmeyer is retiring as ACT’s founding Executive Director to devote herself full-time to her family. Jonelle began as a board member and left her corporate career to become the founding Executive Director of ACT. In just four years, Jonelle has led this dynamic organization to become one of the most effective and collaborative organizations in our region – launching and sustaining nine major community initiatives, doubling the organization’s assets and establishing ACT as the ‘go to’ organization for addressing and solving community needs. During this time she also moved twice, got married and had two babies! Her vision and dedication have helped make ACT a vital force for engaging more people in philanthropy, innovating smart solutions for community needs, and investing in effective actions that are making a real difference in the lives of Alexandrians and our community.
Jonelle was recently honored for her work with the Greater DC Cares 2009 Nonprofit Social Value Leadership Award at a luncheon with keynote speaker First Lady, Michelle Obama. While we are sad to see her go, we know that she will stay actively involved with ACT and the community.
Beginning in August, Don Beyer will be assuming the role of U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Don Beyer has played an integral role in the development of ACT from the very beginning and has served as the Chairman of the Board since 2004. Don has not only contributed to the Alexandria community, but during his 25 years of community activism, he has served in leadership roles on the boards of many business, health, philanthropic, and public policy organizations ranging from the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board and the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce to the American Cancer Society. Don chaired Jobs for Virginia Graduates, the state’s largest high school dropout prevention program. He has also been very active on the board of the DC Campaign to End Teen Pregnancy.
Don has received many awards over the years and most recently was honored with the Business Philanthropist of the Year Award at the 2008 Alexandria Business Philanthropy Summit.
The ACT family would like to offer our best wishes to Jonelle and Don.
