Give Back Alexandria
What happens when you have more passion than capital to help Alexandria? That’s the challenge facing today’s young professionals, many of whom have joined together in ACT’s Give Back Alexandria. Members Scott and Sonia Price believe the group is true to its name. Says Scott, “It’s a great vehicle for giving back. You may not be able to give large sums of money, but collectively and combined with ACT matching funds, we see a big impact.” And the group’s fundraising is always … fun. Last year, its annual Blues and Bluegrass event attracted 200 young Alexandrians. For Scott, who makes a special effort to reach out to diverse segments of the community, the group is also “a great way to get so many different groups together with the common goal of helping the city.” And now, he says, given the current economic climate, “There couldn’t be a better time to get involved.”

 Committee Service: Advancing the Mission Between Board Meetings All nonprofit governing boards have substantially more work to do than can ever be accomplished at monthly or quarterly meetings. Many boards try to solve the problem by creating committees to work on issues between meetings. But even with the best intentions, boards sometimes don’t build their committee structures properly, creating even more work for board and staff.
BoardSource Senior Governance Consultant, David Styers, will walk through the steps for building a solid committee structure and then leveraging those committees to create a more effective and enjoyable board experience.

ABLE is presented by the ACT for Alexandria, Leadership Alexandria, and Volunteer Alexandria to provide fundamental knowledge about effective board leadership and access to training; support a vibrant network of members for sharing and learning; and foster a dynamic environment for recruitment of volunteersfor board service. ABLE hosts three forums each year featuring case studies, methods, and tools for adopting best practices of effective organizations. Current board and commission members and individuals interested in joining boards or commissions are encouraged to attend!
