Join ACT’s Community Listening and Strategic Planning Team

Do you want to create change in Alexandria?

ACT for Alexandria, a community foundation that works to address Alexandria’s most pressing challenges, is developing a strategic plan that will guide our work in the coming years. We believe that the people closest to the issues have the ideas and insights needed to identify promising, innovative solutions. Thus, we are putting together a 17-person committee to listen to the needs of the residents of Alexandria and help define ACT’s strategy. The majority of this committee will be community members and nonprofit staff. Specifically, we are seeking people with lived experience of the issues we seek to address: economic mobility, youth success and racial equity. The committee will also include members of ACT’s staff, board, donors and fundholders.

The committee will connect with different communities within Alexandria, listen to their feedback, and use this information to recommend the future direction for ACT. The committee will meet in-person and virtually from October 2022 to March 2023; meeting schedules will be based on the availability of committee members and may include meetings on weekends and evenings. The planning team kick-off will take place the week of October 10.

Role Description

Serving on the community planning team requires approximately 20 – 25 hours of time between October 2022 and March 2023, which includes the following:

  • Help organize and invite members of your community to listening and planning sessions. Attend 1-2 of these sessions and help facilitate the discussion (if you choose)
  • Attend up to four in-person working sessions for the Community Listening and Planning Team, scheduled at a time that works for the group.

Compensation and Accessibility

Team members will receive a $2,000 stipend for their time. For individuals representing nonprofit organizations, their organizations will receive a $2,000 grant.

Childcare and food will be provided for meetings and funds for transportation will be available. We are committed to ensuring that anyone who is selected can participate. If there are supports you need to fully participate or if you have any questions, please contact

While we seek to be as inclusive as possible, we are not able to offer simultaneous interpretation for planning team meetings. Participants must have a basic level of English proficiency.

ACT seeks to assemble a planning team of individuals who are committed to the vision of a racially just and equitable Alexandria. Team members will have an understanding of how and why systemic and institutional racism have produced unacceptable disparities in the educational, health and economic outcomes for many people of color. Please see the City of Alexandria’s All Alexandria Resolution for more information.

Team members will be curious and eager to learn from others; open to challenging historical norms and “the way things have always been done;” and imaginative in envisioning a future where all Alexandrians can thrive.

The majority of the planning team will be people who are connected to and in regular contact with people and communities that have experienced historical racism and oppression (e.g., a neighborhood, racial group, immigrant community, faith-based or school community, etc.). We are seeking to put together a group of people who have different experiences of Alexandria through the lens of race, immigration, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc.

Applicants must live or work in the City of Alexandria and be 18 or older (residents of the City of Alexandria are preferred).
