Spring2ACTion in one word, is amazing. No, I take that back. It's inspiring. Thrilling. Motivational. Moving. Unique.
Where else will you find friends and strangers alike who rally together to support local organizations like our small, (but growing!) non-profit, Space of Her Own (SOHO)?
In one word, Alexandria.
This was my first year chairing the Spring2ACTion fundraising event for SOHO, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The generosity and outpouring of support, not to mention our phenomenal fundraisers we had, blew me away. Our goal was to raise $7,000--enough to renovate the rooms of 20 underprivileged girls in the Alexandria area. We surpassed that, raising a whopping $8,995--enough to renovate 25 rooms.
For those of you who haven't heard of us, SOHO is a year-long, art-based mentoring program serving pre-teen girls in the Alexandria area. Female mentors and their mentees meet weekly to share a healthy meal, learn about necessary life skills, participate in meaningful community service activities, and work on art projects that eventually are used to decorate their bedrooms. The program is loosely based on the once popular television show "Trading Spaces" because upon completion of the program, girls and mentors work in teams to remodel other girls' bedrooms, with a shoestring budget and refurbished furniture, providing each girl with "a space of her own". If you have a moment to spare, check us out at www.spaceofherown.org, or on Facebook and Twitter at SpaceofHerOwn.
Having personally been a mentor myself, I can tell you first-hand that this money is going to be put to great use and really change the lives of some deserving girls in this area. Next year Space of Her Own will operate two new locations for girls and pilot a second-year of a version for boys, Space of His Own.
