On September 19, ACT for Alexandria invited our supporters on a site visit to UpCycle Creative Reuse Center at the Durant Center. We were graciously hosted by new Executive Director Lexi Keogh and UpCycle board chair Lesley Harris. In 2017, ACT for Alexandria awarded UpCycle Creative Reuse Center a $10,000 grant. UpCycle’s mission is to inspire all people to explore and create by engaging the community in art-making experiences with reused materials.
On our site visit, we had a chance to see the many ways that UpCycle supports the community. From the moment we walked in, we saw their volunteer-run donation collection operation, collecting everything from glass jars to pinecones. We also toured their material resource center which repurposes donations into affordable, reused materials for sale. This center is open to all (including teachers) and is an affordable, eco-friendly way to complete your next Pinterest project. We also stopped in to see Tinker Time, a twice weekly program where people can explore UpCycle’s unique collection of materials and create within UpCycle’s own studio space.
As UpCycle supporters, we were delighted to see a continual influx of resource donors and shoppers as well as children enjoying Tinker Time with their families. After seeing the amazing work that UpCycle does, we walked away thinking of all the things that we can donate for reuse. One person’s trash is another’s treasure!
