City of Alexandria Proclaims the month of September as Legacy Month

Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley, on behalf of Mayor Gaskins and Alexandria City Council, has
officially proclaimed September as Legacy Month in the City of Alexandria, recognizing the
role that legacy giving plays in sustaining the nonprofits that serve the community. The
proclamation marks Alexandria’s first-ever Legacy Month and celebrates Think Ahead
Alexandria, a community-wide initiative led by ACT for Alexandria that encourages
residents to include local nonprofits in their financial and estate plans.

Read the Proclamation: City of Alexandria Legacy Month

WHEREAS, September is recognized as Legacy Month in Alexandria, Virginia, a time to celebrate and promote legacy giving through Think Ahead Alexandria, a community-wide initiative led by ACT for Alexandria; and

WHEREAS, Think Ahead Alexandria, launched in 2022, encourages Alexandrians to include legacy gifts (promises of future funding) in their financial and estate plans, bolstering the long-term sustainability of our local nonprofits; and

WHEREAS, legacy gifts carry transformative power, seeding lasting financial stability for vital nonprofit programs, yet for most nonprofits, the urgency of today’s needs makes it difficult to cultivate the donors who will fund tomorrow’s impact; and because legacy giving is accessible to all, every Alexandrian can become a philanthropist; and

WHEREAS, ACT for Alexandria, established in 2004 as Alexandria’s community foundation, unites donors, nonprofits, and community members to raise awareness of legacy giving and build a culture of philanthropy that supports our city’s critical nonprofit ecosystem; and

WHEREAS, each September, we call on all Alexandrians to plan ahead, embrace their power as philanthropists, and support the nonprofits that strengthen our community, thus ensuring Alexandria thrives for generations to come;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ALYIA GASKINS, Mayor of the City of Alexandria, Virginia, and on behalf of the Alexandria City Council, do hereby recognize September as Legacy Month in the City of Alexandria, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and cause the Seal of the City of Alexandria to be affixed this 19th day of March 2026.
