Shaping Bright Futures for Alexandria’s Girls
As a crime prevention manager by day, Linda Odell is well-versed in youth programming aimed at driving positive outcomes. “I knew we needed something specific for girls,” Linda says, noting the significant resources for boys, as well as the rising rates of girls committing crimes and experiencing teen pregnancy.
Linda envisioned a program that would empower Alexandria girls from under-resourced communities through visual arts, carpentry, life skills, and one-to-one mentoring. One cocktail party later, she connected with a number of women who shared her passion and agreed to help. It was this idea that became Space of Her Own (SOHO).
In 2010, when Linda Odell began exploring ways to sustain the then government and school-funded girls mentor programs with support from community members, she was met with skepticism: “The last thing Alexandria needs is another nonprofit.” Fortunately, she was soon connected with Brandi Yee at ACT, who encouraged Linda to bring her vision to life.
“Our nonprofit would not exist if not for the tremendous support we’ve received from ACT,” Linda says. ACT provided essential consultation, encouragement, and helped her secure key grants to launch the organization. Spring2ACTion and ACT staff continue to play a crucial role in SOHO’s fundraising efforts. “They’re such positive, ‘you can do it’ cheerleaders,” Linda says.
One notable success story came when SOHO developed a paid internship program for a SOHO alumnae. Brianna, once a C and D student, rose to the challenge with support from her mentor and the program, and is now attending VCU with $80,000 in scholarships. Brianna’s life was changed because an unsolicited donation of $10K funded the internship program.
Currently, SOHO supports two 5th grade programs, the SOHO Club for middle schoolers, and paid internships – currently benefiting 80 girls, families, and volunteer mentors. According to Linda, Alexandrians have invested $461,883.59 in 501 girls over the last 12 years, empowering them to soar to bright futures. “ACT and the annual Spring2ACTion campaign are vital for our communications and fundraising efforts,” Linda says.
As ACT celebrates its 20th anniversary, Linda looks forward to another 20 years of impactful connections and continued growth. “Every connection we have with ACT leads to something meaningful. They educate and inspire both donors and the community.”
